When A Young Child Dies By Suicide We Should Be Alarmed!!!!

When we hear that a child has died by suicide it is a devastating blow every single time. Actor Chad Lowe’s daughter Fiona Harper was only 13 years old and took her own life. It has to make you think about - WHY - How come someone so young would go to these measures to end it all, when life is actually just beginning. It is tragic!

She was living a life surrounded by family and friends. She loved dance and was artistically creative. Reading all of the beautiful stories about her kindness are so inspiring, YET - she was unhappy. This shows us that the “internal struggles” are real - profound - and deeply painful. We do not know the depths of Fiona’s story or battles, but one thing is quite clear. She was in a lot of pain.

WE must continue to talk about suicide prevention, the signs and how we can create safe spaces for people to speak. I believe the hardest part for anyone is to ask for help, especially a young adult. There is still that “stigma” surrounding mental health and nobody wants to be looked at as different, especially a teenager. There are so many people out there right now struggling silently. Offering kindness and understanding can help because then they know that they are being seen and heard. Their life is valued and important.

October 2, 2026, the passing of Fiona Harper was ruled a suicide.

Australian rugby players Treyvon, Kaiyah dead at 13, 12

Key takeaways

  • Young Lives Lost: Two Australian rugby players, Treyvon Bradshaw (13) and Kaiyah Kennedy (12), have died by suicide within days of each other, shocking their community.

  • Community Support: Fundraisers and GoFundMe pages have been set up to support the families, providing financial aid, meals, and emotional support.

  • Mental Health Awareness: The Coomera Cutters Rugby League Club emphasizes the importance of mental health resources for young athletes and fostering a supportive community environment.

  • You have to ask yourself why? Why both of these boys would want to commit suicide at such a young age.

  • One life lost in this way is too many, let alone two, so we’re trying to see if there’s anything we can do as a club to help get things out there.”

Treyvon died on September 26, while Kaiyah died on October 2.

  • If you or someone you know is affected by any of the issues raised in this story, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255) or text Crisis Text Line at 741741.

If you are struggling with suicidal thoughts, you can dial the 24/7 National Suicide Prevention hotline at 988 or go to SuicidePreventionLifeline.org.

Where do we go from here?

AWARENESS - EDUCATION - ACCEPTANCE As a nation, community, neighborhoods and families - we need to talk about it. All of it! We can make changes happen and save lives by being willing to open our hearts, be supportive and offer hope.

The suicide rates continue to rise in the USA - The youngest recorded suicide - Six Years Old - How Devastating!

The youngest recorded suicide in the United States is that of Samantha Kuberski, who died at age 6.

Notable Cases

Samantha Kuberski was a six-year-old first-grader from Yamhill County, Oregon, who died by suicide in December 2009. After an argument with her mother, she threatened to kill herself and later hanged herself using a belt tied to a crib bar. Medical examiners confirmed it was a deliberate act, making her the youngest recorded suicide victim in American history psychologyfor.com+2.
Another tragic case involved Kendrea Johnson, also aged 6, who was found hanging by a jump rope tied to a bunk bed post in her Minnesota foster home in 2014 11Alive.com. These cases highlight that even very young children can experience severe psychological distress leading to suicide.

Statistics and Trends

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that over the past two decades, at least 3,600 children under the age of 13 died by suicide in the United States 11Alive.com. Between 1999 and 2016, more than 1,400 children aged 5 to 12 died by suicide, with numbers rising over time. In 2016 alone, 121 children in this age group took their own lives, up from 102 the previous year psychologyfor.com. Emergency room visits for suicidal thoughts and attempts in young children nearly doubled between 2008 and 2015.

Risk Factors and Warning Signs

Even very young children can experience depression, bullying, or other stressors that contribute to suicidal thoughts. Warning signs may include:

  • Sudden changes in behavior or mood

  • Loss of interest in favorite activities

  • Decline in academic performance

  • Changes in eating habits

  • Expressing thoughts about death through drawings, stories, or verbal statements suicidecleanup.com+1

Importance of Awareness and Intervention

These cases underscore the critical need for early mental health intervention, parental awareness, and school-based support systems. While suicide in children under 12 is rare, it is preventable with proper attention to warning signs and timely professional help. Resources such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255 or 988) are available for immediate support suicidecleanup.com.
Understanding that children as young as six can experience suicidal ideation challenges assumptions about childhood innocence and emphasizes the importance of proactive mental health care.
