I will continue to share these stories for awareness and purpose. Our youth are being preyed upon by their own family members. This story is another disturbing example of what is happening right in our own neighborhoods. This is a reminder that if you see children in your community and they are suddenly gone from your sight or daily path, do not ignore it; instead ask the questions. More people need to be asking questions when children are no longer seen.
This family locked their kids up and they were living in deplorable conditions. The difference in this outcome, is that a family member chose to step up and report the parents to the police, asking for a wellness check. This one act saved the lives of these children. We must be vigilant in our quest to keep our kids safe.
I will continue to repeat myself over and over again until people start to listen. We must all do our part, and that starts with breaking the silence.
Speaking up SAVES LIVES
Parents of five kids who were locked in a "dungeon" bristling with surveillance cameras and locks have been arrested.
The home of James Russell, 65, and Carly Kahl, 41, in Redstone Township, Pennsylvania, was raided after police received complaints of children living in "deplorable conditions". Pennsylvania State Troopers arrived to find the kids, who were aged between five and 14 years old, were confined to a feces-covered room that had its windows boarded up.
Pennsylvania's District Attorney revealed that authorities were informed of the horrific situation after a "brave family member" reported it to ChildLine. "Law enforcement cannot be in every household and every single minute of every day; we need people to come forward and think of these children."
The couple has been charged with endangering children, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, drug charges and use of an incapacitation device.
